All Canadian Wine Championships
Regional Diversity in all Canadian Wine Regions Shines Through at the 2008 ACWC
Windsor, Ontario – Over the past week, thirty-six wine writers, sommeliers, and industry professionals from across Canada and the U.S., including such talent as Dan Berger, Shari Darling, Larry Paterson, Michael Pinkus and Adam Dial, met in Windsor, Ontario to judge the 28th annual All Canadian Wine Championships. A total of 1045 wines were submitted from 152 wineries from Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta and Atlantic Canada, setting a new record for the country’s oldest and largest wine competition.
As in previous years the judges were impressed with the quality of submissions in many categories. Also the organizers were pleased that once again all the wine regions represented in the judging fared well, with trophies and significant medals being awarded from coast to coast, in all categories. Alsatian varietals positively shone this year.
In a country as large, and with as much diversity, as Canada, it is truly exciting to watch as each region develops its own identity. Indeed, although all areas had many successes in a variety of categories, it seemed apparent that Ontario’s whites, British Columbia’s reds, fruit categories and hybrids from the Maritimes and especially Quebec were notable.
This year the ACWC also followed up with a new component to the competition, in the form of a charity event—“A Passport to Canada” wine and cheese tasting, to benefit and assist in the Western Campus Redevelopment project for Windsor Regional Hospital. The organizers were thrilled with the success of the affair and the over 500 enthusiastic wine lovers in attendance left clamoring for information on next year’s event.
Thank you to all our entrants, and best of the season to you!
Bev Carnahan
Director, ACWC
